Eight Wastes Check Sheet

Waste is any step or action in a process that is not required to successfully complete a process. They are non-value-adding steps: defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilized talent, transportation, inventory, motion, and extra processing. When such waste in a process is removed, only the steps that are required to deliver a satisfactory product or service to the customer (value-adding steps) remain in the process.

Use this simple check sheet to help identify waste in your processes and prioritize them for removal in your process improvement efforts using the project charter template, SIPOC template, A3 problem-solving template, and the FMEA template.

The Eight Wastes Check Sheet includes:

  • Definition and examples of each type of waste
  •  A column for prioritization (low/medium/high)
  • A column to take notes on the specific waste
