Leadership Tip: Challenge Yourself to Discuss Difficult Issues During Meetings

Challenge yourself to discuss the most important and difficult issues during team meetings.

Today’s Tip:

Ask each team member to share the one most important issue on her/his mind. Use this input to create an agenda for your next meeting. Push the team to engage in spirited debate about each topic to ensure all ideas are heard.

Food for Thought:

Boring meetings are a big problem and a waste of time. When team members lose interest in a meeting, they fail to raise critical issues because they are more concerned about keeping the peace or just getting out of the meeting on time. But people get engaged in meetings when there is something at stake. The best leaders give team members a reason to care at the beginning of a meeting by setting an agenda with important topics. Further, they don’t let the meeting end until the issue(s) has been resolved.
